Ketchup and mustard

IMAG0389

What do you do when you leave your camera at home and dh isn't around to snap a photo? You find a shiny thing and use your phone to snap some shots.

IMAG0388

This, my friends, is what I call a comfortable outfit. These jeggings are basically like pajamas. So much so that sometimes when I'm at work I have to look down to make sure I didn't accidentally wear my pajamas to work.

Ok, that's not true. But they are comfortable enough that I can get all cozy in my work chair and sit with one foot tucked neatly under me. Like a little school girl. Wearing pants the color of ketchup and a vest the color of mustard.

And these loafers. These loafers. Are amazing. Clearly the winner for best shoes bought in 2011. Kudos to you, Dolce Vita, for bringing them into my life.

My brain is so empty right now I can only talk about my clothes. Cut me some slack, y'all. What would you rather me talk about? Seriously. What should I talk about on here? I'm currently taking suggestions.

Music Monday: The Luckiest (Ben Folds cover)

Have you heard? Ben Folds Five is back in the studio. This is exciting stuff, y'all, so I decided to pay tribute. Now, I'm sure you'll point out that this is indeed a Ben Folds song and not a Ben Folds Five song; well, let me just say congratulations for reading the title of my video. Yes, I know it's Ben Folds. But it's the song I chose to cover today, friends, even if it is a slightly odd tribute.

And also, this is dedicated to that guy I live with. We don't get too sappy around these parts.

Keep on rockin' those suburbs (also Ben Folds)!

Birthday bag

IMG_4712

I'm sure you missed my non-in-HD ramblings on Thursday. (See here and here.) On Wednesday I was home sick all day. And I'm not just talking a cough-cough, sneeze-sneeze, pass-me-the-Nyquil sick. I'm talking a bucket-by-the-bed, saltine-crackers-and-gatorade kind of sick. (No, you didn't ask, but it's my blog and I'll go into detail if I want to.) I was in no state to film a video. Oddly enough, the last time I was sick like that I did film a video out of sheer boredom of having nothing else to do but sit in bed.

Maybe I'll show it to you sometime.

IMG_4713

Other than Wednesday's mishap where I had to eat white carbs and sugar to make sure my body didn't fall apart, I've been doing rather great on my slow-carb diet. By yesterday I wasn't even that hungry come meal time and didn't really have any cravings for a sugary or salty snack. Today is "cheat day," though, which means I get to eat whatever I want.

I made the dh* roll out of bed before 8 o'clock this morning so we could go to our favorite breakfast joint and I could get some of the most delicious carbs out there. Oh. Man. So. Good.

I haven't been able to eat anything else since, but I predict some apples and peanut butter or maybe some cheese in my future (oooooh, I'm a wild one).

Now, on to more important things! My bag!

As you may know, my birthday was ages ago. What I wanted was some new boots. But after looking and looking I decided that no boots (except maybe these) were really piquing my interest.

So I moved on. To this:

Ever since receiving an iPad for Christmas from my in-laws, I've been searching for a structured satchel to keep it safe. But it also had to have a cross-body strap to please this scooter gal. And so this bag became my birthday gift. To myself. From myself. A couple of months late.

Ok, lovelies, it's time for me to rush off to eat more carbs and dairy products. Yum!

*I finally learned what this means in Internet-talk: Dear husband. Thanks, Google!

I wear my regular glasses at night. (And February's "Do One Thing")

See what I did there? I wear my regular glasses all the time.

I'll keep this short because I'm craving sugar like a pregnant lady and it's making me grumpy.

Yes, I realize it's not February yet. But since I started January's Do One Thing late, I figured I'd start Febrary's early? I guess?

Anyhoo. I've started the slow-carb diet. Yay. Another fun food project. (Not my first.) I'm already drooling over the foods I get to eat on my "cheat day." And it's only day two.

The end.

Music Monday: Cathedrals (Jump, Little Children cover)

Anybody who knew me in college knows that my favorite band at the time was Jump, Little Children, a group from Charleston, South Carolina. My friends and I went to every Jump concert we could and knew just about every song. Unfortunately, the band is no longer together.

This is my favorite Jump, Little Children song, "Cathedrals."

Things I've learned about style blogging (mostly photo-related)

No one wants to see pictures of my outfits everyday. Especially me.

Smiling in photos is not cool among lots of bloggers, but I just can't help it.

IMG_4660

You will feel weird asking your friend or husband to take pictures of you. But you'll feel weirder setting up self-timed shots in empty alleys.

Props help. (See current post photos.)

IMG_4662

Background and good lighting definitely matter.

Participating in a bunch of blogger weekly "things" is boring. Picking just one or two blogger "things" that you actually enjoy is quite fun.

IMG_4664

Vlogging is my NEW FAVORITE THING.

I'll never wears heels on the daily, even for fashion's sake.

IMG_4665

A little humor goes a long way.

Getting inspiration from other bloggers is a lot of fun.

Trying new trends is fun. Rooting out the ones that just don't work for you is key.

Other bloggers: What have you learned?

Thursday Latelies 1.19.12

  • Chelsea Crew wedges. Love them.
  • These candles make my apartment smell not like whatever I've cooked the night before.
  • How to know if he's "secretly" into you. Ask him. Duh.
  • Nails. They're fun!
  • I ramble about books I'm reading and how late it is.

How to buy a coffee maker

A couple of weeks ago, the hubs and I set off on a grand adventure to purchase a coffee maker amid all of the post-holiday sales. Not only did we come home with a great new coffee maker, but we also got an education in how to choose the right one from our neighbor who works at Bloomingdale's (and, conveniently, specializes in coffee makers).

Here are a few helpful hints for any one you out there in the market for a new brewer.

IMG_4629

The showerhead is important. I didn't even know that coffee makers had showerheads. Did you? It's basically where the water pours over the grounds. The wider it is, the more evenly your coffee will brew. You know how sometimes your grounds will end up with a giant well in the middle after a brew? Well, not so with our new coffee maker.

A built-in grinder is a bad idea. Because the steam from the brewing coffee will ruin the beans. True story.

A thermal carafe is fine, if you don't mind waiting the extra few minutes for it to warm up. We ended up with a classic glass carafe, but I realize the extra few minutes to let the thermal carafe get hot isn't really that big of a deal, particularly since I especially wanted a new coffee maker so we could program it to brew in the morning.

Is that it? Is that all we learned? I guess so. Oh, well, it's still helpful stuff. Also, our new fancy-schmancy coffee maker has a water filter and everything.

IMG_4633

Also, check out these bracelets I made at the craft party my friend and I hosted in November. True, they were supposed to be gifts. (Hey, they might still be... eventually. Maybe.) But I just had to test them out. Here's how to make 'em.

Music Monday: Take Me Out of the City (Dawes cover)

For this inaugural Music Monday, I chose a simple folk number by a band called Dawes. They have lots of great tunes, so check 'em out!

Listen to Your World

Today I'm going to see Derek Webb and his wife, Sandra McCracken talk about being artists at the home of my church's music director. I'm more than a little bit excited.

Thursday Latelies 1.12.12

BAM! It's me on video. Don't get scared, children. (Especially from the thumbnail. Could it be any worse? Yes. Yes, it probably could. Guess I need to learn a thing or two about video editing. Bored bored bored.) I'm planning on making this a weekly thing, so just get used to it, or unsubscribe now. You're been warned.

1. Geetar time.
2. I bought this and this. They both make my days a little brighter.
3. Things I like and don't like in the latest Lucky Magazine.

Thanks to Rose a la Mode (via Bex... a diary) for cluing me into Thursday Latelies.

Things I've learned since getting married

I realize this list will probably grow throughout the rest of my marriage to hubs (can I get a "what, what," married ladies?), but I thought I'd share a few of the most important things I've learned in my 3.5 years as a wifey, some about relationships and some about myself.

What I think is normal isn't necessarily normal. It might be downright weird to the hubs. I first noticed this when I learned that he didn't like the sheet tucked into the end of the bed. In fact, he doesn't like sleeping with the sheet at all. I thought that was absolutely weird and would make the bed as "normal" in the beginning, only to watch him untuck the sheet on his side every night. It was at least two years into our marriage before I figured out how to resolve this: fold the sheet in half and only tuck it into my side of the bed. Now, we can both sleep soundly and weirdly. Anyone else suffering from different sleeping habits, you're welcome.

This type of thing happens often--where I have an expectation that doesn't fall in line with one of his. And now I really understand how that whole compromise thing has to come into play.

IMG_4589

I'm a roller-coaster Martha Stewart. Some nights I love spending hours in the kitchen cooking and baking and experimenting. Others I loathe the thought of it. Cleaning and decorating are the same. Why, the other day I rearranged the living room. Just because I got some weird urge for a change in furniture position. The good thing is, although my husband loves eating my food, he never expects dinner to be on the table at 6:00pm sharp every night. (Thank goodness, too, since I'm usually just leaving work at 6.) He would rather me be stress-free than feel the pressure to be a domestic goddess.

And I'm not ashamed of my lukewarm Martha Stewart-ness.

Sometimes I choose the wrong battles. Does it really matter that hubs forgot to take the trash out when I asked him?* No, definitely not. But I used to do that passive sighing loudly thing when something bugged me. Really? Sighing? Yeah, I learned the ridiculousness of that pretty quickly. After all, "love is patient, love is kind," but mostly, it's patient.

IMG_4594

The time spent apart can be just as important as the time spent together. Hubs and I love each other (duh.). We have things we love to do together and friends in common, of course. But we also have our own friends and our own hobbies. I truly believe that spending time apart can make the times together that much more special.

I'm an over-communicator. This is something I'm working on, especially since hubs is definitely not an over-communicator. I'm trying to choose when and what I need to communicate.

Other married women out there, what important lessons have you learned in your marriage?

Spotty inspiration

When I saw this Jessica Alba look on One Hundred Inspirations, I got excited because I scored this dotted sweater from Old Navy for just $10. Granted, my look is nothing like Jessica's, and I would've worn it anyway, but it's still pretty cool to feel like I'm on top of things fashion-wise. And, yes, the red pants make another appearance. I love them.

Inspiration: Favorite bloggers of 2011

I love my blog-browsing time (which seems to be whenever I have a spare moment on the internet, except while I'm at work). Most of the blogs I browse are style-oriented, and I thought I'd give a few of my faves a little shout-out. Thanks for your inspiration!

A Pretty Penny: Not only is Keira lovely, but she puts together the most effortlessly cool outfits. I always notice her colorful lipstick and nail polish. She's my feminine style inspiration.

Blue Collar Catwalk: Kyla is an adventurous dresser and person, with her kooky cool style and roller derby hobby. And she has the most adorable dog in the blogosphere. She's my lifestyle inspiration.

A Beautiful Mess: Elsie's "about me" section is absolutely true. Her blog is "full of pretty things that you can make and wear!" She's my crafty style inspiration.

Girl & Closet: Veronika wears a dress and tights like nobody's business. She always looks lovely and colorful and put-together. She's my adorable style inspiration.

Adored Austin: Indiana is always chatting it up with other style bloggers on the scene. She's spends lots of time keeping up with the fashion world in Austin. She's my style event inspiration.

Monster Cakes: Jessica fills her blog with honest observations about life and faith. She's open without being dramatic, and her stories are hilarious. (She's also a fellow four-eyed geek.) She's my thoughtful style inspiration.

Atlantic-Pacific: Blair's style is way different from mine--I'm amazed at her ability to wear heels just about everyday--but I love keeping up with her sophisticated style. Plus, she's repping my town in the blogosphere. She's my sophisticated style inspiration.

What Would a Nerd Wear: Tania's style is cool, comfortable and just right for a bookworm grad student. I can totally relate (in my past life). Plus, she's a whiz at layering. She's my casual style inspiration.

This is by no means a comprehensive list of the bloggers I love to follow, but it's a start. I'm looking forward to another year of great style (and life!) inspiration!

Recipe: Easy-Substitution Shepherd's Pie

When I started thinking about what to make for dinner last night, I knew I had two of the ingredients needed to make shepherd's pie: ground beef and potatoes. I figured the rest would just fall into place.

Now, typically when I end up using substitutions, it doesn't turn out so well. This time, it was different. These pies turned out great. The hubs said so, so I know it's true. I used this recipe from Epicurious. (Thanks, iPad app!) I've included the recipe below, with my successful substitutions in parenthesis. Enjoy!

Nan's Shepherd's Pie (With Bethy's substitutions)

Ingredients:
  • 4 large russet potatoes (or 2 pounds baby dutch yellow potatoes)
  • 2 pounds (85% lean) ground sirloin (or 1 pound 85% lean ground beef; what's this "ground sirloin" business?)
  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 large onions, chopped (or 2 medium-sized shallots, chopped)
  • 1 large garlic clove, smashed, peeled and finely chopped (oops... I used 3 cloves)
  • 1 (15 oz.) can tomato puree (or about 5 teaspoons tomato paste... however much you have lying around)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen petit peas, thawed (I just used a cup of whatever frozen peas I had. They're all kind of petit, right?)
  • 3/4 cup half-and-half (is it weird that I used buttermilk? It worked.)
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 cup (packed) shredded reduced-fat extra-sharp cheddar cheese (I used Monterrey Jack)
Preparation:

1. Do NOT peel the potatoes if you use the baby dutch yellow ones. It is such a hassle. But do peel the russets, chop into 1-inch chunks, and throw into a large pot of water. Bring water to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer until the potatoes are soft, about 10 minutes.

2. Cook the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking apart the meat with a wooden spoon until browned, about seven minutes. Transfer the meat to a plate for now. Preheat the oven to 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

3. Add 2 tablespoons of oil to the skillet. Toss in the onions (shallots) and garlic and saute over medium heat, stirring often, for about 6 minutes (about 3 if you're using shallots). Add the browned meat back in the skillet. Add in the tomato puree or paste and cayenne pepper. Stir, then bring to a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes. (*If using the paste, you may need to add 1/4 cup water so that the filling doesn't dry out.) Stir in the peas.

4. Drain the potatoes. Mash them well and then stir in the half-and-half, salt and pepper to taste. (*I added in the buttermilk right after draining and let the potatoes soak a bit. I also tossed in some olive oil, just 'cause.)

5. Grab 2 1/2-to 3-quart baking dishes or 4 personal ramekins. Spoon the meat mixture into the baking dishes and sprinkle the cheese on top. Spoon the potatoes on top, smoothing over the meat, leaving about an inch border around the edge. (If using ramekins, you don't have to leave any room around the edge.)

6. Drizzle olive oil over the top and then bake until the potatoes are golden, about 10 minutes. Cool for about five minutes before serving.

Don't believe that I actually made this? I have photos to prove it.

Waiting for potatoes.

Before.

After! (With roasted acorn squash on the side. Yum!)

Look at how delish that is!

Anthro Birthday

Did you make it to the Anthropologie 50 percent off sale a few weeks back? I'm finally getting around to sharing an outfit photo featuring my purchase: this wispy cowl-neck sweater. I love it, and I've gotten lots of compliments, which is how I knew it was a keeper. I actually purchased two other pieces: another sweater and a cropped jacket. But I ended up returning them both after careful consideration and realizing that they weren't my style.

Did you score anything from the Anthro sale?

Holidaze

I want to tell you all about my holiday. About the two lovely services we attended on Christmas Eve that book-ended a Christmas karaoke session. About the amazing homemade egg nog I conjured up for Christmas morning. (Thanks, Laura!) About the sparkly diamond earrings that my husband surprised me with. But I think I'll let a few photos speak for themselves. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday!

Christmas morning

New Year's Eve

Winner! Blogiversary and Holiday Giveaway

It's that time! Time to pick a winner for the Blogiversary and Holiday Giveaway! I was going to make a video to make things extra fun, but then the holidays got in the way. So instead, you just get a randomly generated number. Don't worry, the effect is the same.

And so, without further ado, the winner of the BADgal lash mascara from Benefit cosmetics is... Stephanie! Congrats, Steph! I happen to know you have a birthday coming up, so maybe you'd like some new mascara for a gift?
